This is a miniature frame that references the Sansovino style of frame that came to prominence in Italy in the 16th century. The smaller frames measure about 0.5" x 0.5". As a side note, they are displayed on a small section of wall from the National Gallery in London, which I happened to pick up when the building was under construction.
For scale, they are displayed with a 5p coin.
